A friend who worked at a Ford dealer said that letting the fuel get really low causes the fuel pump to overheat because the fuel cools the pump inside the gas tank. If you ever run out of fuel or let it get very low, you can damage the fuel pump. Have the fuel pressure tested and if it is low, then it is the fuel pump.
